Research scientists at Biosafety Level (BSL) 4 facilities can obtain authenticated stocks of Zaire Ebola virus strain UK1 from the National Collection of Pathogenic Viruses (NCPV). Teams from PHE Culture Collections and High Containment Microbiology departments worked together to make the strain available.
Ebola causes severe viral haemorrhagic fever. Over 9,500 people have died since the current Ebola virus disease outbreak emerged in West Africa last year, the majority of cases occurring in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. The average mortality rate among hospitalised patients for these countries is currently 61%. (Data from PHE’s Ebola epidemiological update No. 24: 27 February 2015)
NCPV has the expertise to maintain and supply stocks of the highly pathogenic virus
to appropriate organisations. All appropriate safety procedures and protocols will be followed. The virus stocks can be used for investigations into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of Ebola.
